Specifics of the Facility
The Maryland ISE facility COK investigators visited includes nine sheds, each approximately 176 yards long (the length of nearly two football fields) and approximately 40 yards wide, with an average of 12 rows (each stacked with three to four levels of cages) of birds. The entire facility houses approximately 800,000 birds at any given time.
Each cage is approximately 24-inches wide, 17.5 inches deep, and 14 inches tall. In these cages, there is an average of eight birds, although COK investigators found some cages with 11 hens.
State of New Jersey vs. ISE America
On October 17, 2000, the Central Warren Municipal Court found ISE America guilty on two counts of animal cruelty and fined the company $250 for each case. The case involved two live hens who were found tossed in a garbage can filled with dead hens. The verdict was eventually overturned by a higher court.
