Note: COK’s investigation at ISE-America ended in May 2001. Since then, COK has conducted several other undercover investigations. Please click here to see more recent COK investigations.

On April 13, 2001, Washington, D.C.-based animal rights organization Compassion Over Killing (COK) wrote to ISE-America, an egg supplier with facilities in multiple states. COK expressed concern about ISE’s treatment of animals and requested a tour of ISE’s Cecilton, Md., facility, “home” to more than 800,000 hens. ISE did not reply.

Consequently, members of COK investigated the facility, documented many egregious abuses of the hens living there, and contacted Cecilton authorities, requesting that ISE be prosecuted for animal abuse. But, no action was taken.

As such, on May 23, 2001, COK activists rescued eight hens from ISE-America who were in dire need of veterinary attention. These hens now live in safe homes where they can feel sun on their backs, scratch the earth with their feet, and fulfill their needs and desires, free from the horror of their previous existence. They will never again be abused by the egg industry.

More than 330 million egg-laying hens in the United States are not so lucky.
